Maybe I was too relaxed when I went into Martha’s that night. Maybe Ava’s pussy was too much of a drug. I got the guns in the closet at the back of their storeroom. Tucked them away nice and tight. Called Axle to be the lookout. Took all the right precautions. Checked the surroundings. Not once, but three times. Still didn’t notice the car sitting parked in the dark a mile back...

Ava

Cloud nine wasn’t high enough; it had to be at least cloud fifteen I was on. At work I came in whistling. I felt as if I was glowing. You just had sex with a badass biker, and he’s a sweetheart too.

“I gotta go store these guns. It’s midnight.” That part got a little uncomfortable afterwards. I had this horrible feeling about the guns being stored in the shop. I said nothing, but he sensed the tension.

“It’s going to be okay. Next week I’m going to take them out of there. I promise.” He’d kissed my lips and slipped out of my warm bed. In the back of my mind I thought he might have been sleeping with me just so he could store the guns. That thought quickly left my mind when my phone pinged a little while later.

Miss you already. Btw, you are a tiger in bed. I love it. I want some more.

I’ll be waiting. See you soon?

Yes. Call you tomoro.

My heart skipped a beat. I didn’t have any expectations, but my heart told me it was okay to have some. I wanted to see him again. I liked his bear-like voice. I liked him holding me in his arms. I liked chatting to him about his brothers. From the glint in his eye I could tell he loved them. I wanted to photograph him. To have him smear some paint on me.

When I daydreamed as I opened the till I realized I wanted so much from him. My mother had to click her fingers a few times in my face to get me to focus on what she was saying.

“Sorry, Mom. I was thinking of something else,” I said dreamily.

“You’re thinking of that Shadow, aren’t you?” She pinched my arm.

I rubbed it where it stung. “Oww, Mom! I’m not talking to you about him. Besides, we are just getting to know one another.” That was a bold-faced lie in one way, and in another it was the truth.

The day just got better, the sun got a little brighter, and the customers left good tips for me. Even Roy, who could sometimes be grumpy, was nice to me. Must have been the post hump glow.

Shadow texted me to see if I was okay. We set up another time to see each other again. Edgewood now seemed like the best place ever for me to be. A few of the Guardians made their way in during the day, which I wasn’t expecting.

One of them came in who was tall and built like a prizefighter. I was in awe of him, but at the same time a little scared.
